Turn The Tide started out as a project in October 2006, when people involved in several other Finish hardcore bands, decided it was time for a straight edge band playing traditional hardcore in Finland again, as such a band had been lacking since the breakup of On A Solid Rock. Although Turn The Tide take the inspiration for their sound clearly from the classic youthcrew bands, their sound also contains elements of melodic punkrock and even classic rock, with raw production adding an extra sting. Shouted by a voice that sometimes brings Ian MacKaye to mind, the lyrics on their debut-7” are reflections of everyday life and relations with other people: greed, love, self-confidence and personal choices and growth.

Turn The Tide has been a busy band lately. After a four way split release, this new 7” hits my doorsteps. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Turn The Tide, they are from Finland and started out in October 2006. The lyrics are probably the most interesting thing about this release. All lyrics are very personal but written in a way you can easily identify yourself with those words. Music wise it is old school hardcore but some of the songs are a bit longer then the average hardcore song and lean a bit on the Dag Nasty sound during the Can I Say era. These songs are actually the most interesting because they captured that sound and used it to create a sound of their own. I am amazed to see that such a young band can be so mature sound wise. The production is just fine and the artwork looks nice too. This 7” especially stands out thanks to the original sound and very good lyrics. Be sure to pick it up when you see this at your local distro.

Hailing from the same city as the Finnish Straight Edge hardcore band, On A Solid Rock...Turn The Tide brings back classic youth crew hardcore with the right amount of melody. The recording of these tracks are quite raw, capturing the band’s enthusiasm and intensity. Turn The Tide’s lyrics are about achieving your goals, affection, appreciating one’s life, right decisions, and self-confidence. This is their debut EP on Commitment Records. Finnish sXe hardcore is now back on the map!

What's Behind These Eyes" somme toute assez classique. C'est mélodique, rapide, parfois lapidaire mais ça se laisse aisément écouter ("One Way Road", "Watching You Go Down").
For You", "One Way Road"…).

Wow, this is Punkrock influenced hardcore with a voice “that sometimes brings Ian MacKaye to mind” as the Commitment Records text says about them. And to a certain point that’s true. The style reminds you more of Ian MacKaye than the actual sound of the voice. The lyrics Antti sings are very personal and emotional what I like most about this Finish band. They aren’t silly; they are very authentic and well written with nice words and fit with the mood transported by the rough music. But the music isn’t just rough it’s mixed with melodies, with rock influences sometimes, with nice little breaks and back ups which are intense and well recorded. A thing which is not that cool is the fact that the songs aren’t individual enough in their sounding. After several listenings it’s difficult to remind special parts or elements. If they work a bit more on their individuality this might be a band to remember. Solving The Puzzle is definitely the best track on this record and this one is worth buying this piece of vinyl. The cover shows a drawing which underpins perfectly the sound of this 7”. Check out Turn The Tide their mixture is worth it.

Turn The Tide are a hardcore band from Finland, and although there are definitely elements of the traditional youth crew sound usually associated with this label, there’s more to them than that. The three songs on the A side are the treading more obvious sXe ground, but the two on the flip have a more punk rock feel to them, and I’m sure it’s not just because they’re from Finland that I hear a hint of Endstand in “Solving The Puzzle”. This was a bit of a surprise, but not an unwelcome one.

I really had fun listening to this record. ‘WHAT’S BEHIND THESE EYES’. 5 tracks effort vinyl 7’’ from TURN THE TIDE, Finnish band devoted to old-school HC with kinda rockish mood too. It’s out via xCommitmentx records ( renowned Dutch positive sXe label, focused on 7” vinyl, who released works from the likes of Reaching Forward, Vitamin X, The Miracle, Pointing Finger… ). These five guys, who struggle to bring back the sXe ethics among the Finnish scene, formed in 2006 releasing last year also a demo and taking part in a 4 way split EP ‘The Black And White’ (featuring Speak Out and Make The Difference both from the USA and Up Yours from The Netherlands, and out through Positive And Focused records ). Their sound lists bands like Minor Threat, Dag Nasty, Hoodoo Gurus (why? if you have the chance listen to ‘Slave Girl’ EP ) and Rites Of Spring as good reference points ( but consider I called some these references thinking about the overall feeling of tracks themselves more than about their actual sound ). ‘My Life My Calls’ is a straight up punch of metallic HC with a huge bass, while ‘Solving The Puzzle’ comes with rockish hints and has got more of a Rites Of Spring feel as far as guitar urgency goes. Well written and really heartfelt lyrics. Recording is rough and really intense which means extra points in my book. I hope I'll have soon the chance to check'em out live.
